How many of us celebrate Tamil New Year's day? For Tamils in Tamil Nadu, it is at least easier to remember the date as it is a declared holiday. As for Tamils living in foreign countries, those who receive Tamil satellite channels look forward to Tamil New Year's day to watch their favorite actor/actress's interviews and the other special programs. What about the others? Do we ever celebrate our New Year?

Let's think for a moment. Won't it be worth while to spend at least one hour on that day to read a good Tamil book like Thirukural or Aathichoodi? If we do not have Tamil books at home, why not make it a point to get one good Tamil book this New Year? For those who would like to have some fun, try playing this game with your family on this special day. This is how the game goes. Use only Tamil words at home on the New Year's day. If you find it difficult to translate a common English word to Tamil, then keep an English-to-Tamil dictionary handy for reference; this is allowed in the game. The winner is the one who used only Tamil words in conversations with least number of references to the dictionary. He/she can choose as the prize whatever he/she wants within a fixed budget.
