A South African Tamil View of Tamilnadu
TAMIL TRIBUNE, April 2007 (ID. 2007-04-01)
I am a South African of Tamil origin and I just read your article on Tamil independence (Tamil Tribune, April 1999). I would like to give you my own views. I think the reason Tamil Nadu has not seceded from India is because its leaders do not wish this to happen. It does seem unrealistic to think that a nation of over 60 million people could not form into a viable country. I believe the longer the delay towards an independent Tamil nation, the more the Tamil culture will be lost to north Indian propaganda. I have viewed many Tamil language movies, and I must say that I am very disturbed by the very light skin of the leading actors and actresses. In South Africa we have many thousands of Tamils, but you would be hard pressed to find many that fair, unless they have other blood in them. [Editor's Note: Many of the lead actresses in Tamil movies today are brought from northern India because of their fair skin. Many of them do not know Tamil and do not care to learn Tamil. They either read Tamil words written in their own languages or the dialog was simply dubbed.] The race of Tamils has been urbanized and civilized for several millennia. In all that time it had never been conquered and stayed conquered until the fall of Pandiyas, Cholas and Cheras around 1300 AD. The British left in 1947 after about two centuries of rule but Tamil Nadu is still a land conquered. It saddens me to think that this once great people, dominating the 'Indian ocean', have now been reduced to the margins of history or written out of the history books entirely. South Africa had the African National Congress (ANC). Who will free the Tamils? FIS070327 2007-a1d This is a "Category B" article.
