South Indian Air Hostesses Unhappy at Air India
TAMIL TRIBUNE, June 2009 (ID. 2009-06-04)
Indian government owned Air India introduced new uniforms for its air hostesses effective April 1, 2009. This new uniform consists of dark colour blouses, and saris (sarees) with black and red stripes. Airhostesses from the south Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are not happy with the new uniform because of the predominance of black color. South Indian ladies are in general darker complexioned than their north Indian counterparts. While darker color dresses look good on fair complexioned ladies, they do not look good on darker complexioned ladies. The Tamil daily Thina Thanthi reported that south Indian air hostesses at Air India are unhappy about it. This again shows that the Indian government and its business undertakings do not care about the sensitivities of south Indians. Taken alone, this incidence of airhostess uniform is nothing much. Seen along with the Indian Airlines' attempt to replace saris with suridar-salwar (September 2006) and Indian Railways attempt to remove south Indian dishes from its menu (early 2007), there is a pattern of bias in favour of the north. Indian Airlines and Indian Railways backed off after some uproar from the public in the south. South Indians should ever be vigilant. Otherwise south would be swallowed by the north.
